The Birth of Aikido

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

The term ‘Aikido’ is formed by the combination of three characters in the Japanese language. ‘Ai’, which signifies ‘joining’; ‘ki’, which represents ’spirit’ and ‘do’, which which means ‘way’. These three words in fact actualy do encapsulate the essence of Aikido as a type of martial art: ‘the joining of the spirit to find the way’. It was only in the period from 1930’s to the 1940’s that the name Aikido was officially accepted as the name of this martial art variety.

Aikido uses methods that do not seriously injure or kill not like different types of martial art. The movements and skills being taught are just intended to divert attention or immobilize attackers. This is perhaps the explanation why most people prefer Aikido, because of its concentration on peace and tranquility as opposed to violence and conflict. In deed, Aikido teacher, Morihei Ueshiba, believes that to have power over hostility without causing any injury is the art of peace.

Ueshiba, who is also called Osensei, which signifies ‘Great Teacher’, formed Aikido from the doctrine of Daito-ryu aiki-jujutsu. He incorporated the methods of the ‘yari’, the spear; the ‘juken’, the bayonet; and the ‘jo’, which is a short quarterstaff. But what ultimately distinguishes Aikido from other types of martial art is the fact that its proponents can strike while empty-handed. Proponents require no arms for their protection.

As a small child, he was much into physical fitness and conditioning. This was because of his vow to avenge his father’s attackers. In due course, his studies and activities brought him to the discipline of the various martial arts. He studied many of them. He even has certificates for fencing, fighting with spears, etc. He has learned it all. This is possibly the explanation why Aikido is such a diverse and multi-disciplinary kind of martial art.

Yet in spite of his skill, he was still dissatisfied. He felt that there was still something missing. It was then that he turned to the religions. He studied under a religious leader, Onisaburo Deguchi of the sect called Omoto-kyo in Ayabe. Deguchi taught him to take care of his psychic growth. He then combined his spiritual beliefs and his mastery of the different martial arts and Aikido was formed.

His relationship with this charismatic spiritual leader Deguchi also smoothed the path for his introduction to the elite political and military personnel as a martial artist. Because of this relationship, he was able to found Aikido and even pass on his teachings to students, who have, in turn, created their own methods and movement in Aikido.

Aikido is a blend of the different styles of jujitsu as well as some of the techniques of sword and spear fighting, of which Ueshiba was an expert. To obtain an general picture, Aikido combines the joint locks and throws of jujitsu and the techniques of the body necessary when fighting with swords and spears.

Oriental in origin, it was brought to the West by Minoru Mochizuki when he visited France in 1951. He introduced the Aikido methods to students who were learning judo. In 1952, Tadashi Abe came to France as the official Aikikai Honbu representative. Then in 1953, Kenji Tomiki toured throughout the United States while Koichi Tohei stayed in Hawaii for a full year where he set up a dojo. Aikido then spread its influence in the United Kingdom two years after and in 1965, it reached Germany and Australia. At present, Aikido has centres all over the world.

Tai Chi Chuan Instructor has Not had a Lesson in Tai Chi!

Sunday, December 20th, 2009

[I:http://mdiexplorer.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/AlCase18.jpg]This is going to be, for some, an upsetting article on tai chi chuan. I’ve never taken instruction in the art of Tai Chi Chuan, you see, but my tai chi is the best. I don’t mean to be self serving, but let us see if you can find fault with me after you have read how I came up with my tai chi.

I began my study of tai chi with a book, Lee Ying Arng Modified Tai Chi for Health. I spent hours a night memorizing the form, trying to figure out the applications, trying to figure out what it all meant. And, it didn’t mean much.

So I found books by Chen Man Ching, and I went over the tai chi of Chen and Yang and Wu and Sun, but they all spoke this gobbledegook that didn’t make sense. Then, a stroke smarts and frustration, I began doing my Karate, I had near ten years experience in Kang Duk Won karate, and this tai chi thing started to resolve. I was using good, old karate power to feed the form, and it worked, and then I was able to translate karate power into Tai Chi power.

More important, I was neglecting all the bushwah philosophy and mysticism in the books and using physics. The martial arts, you see, are taught through the memorization of random strings of data. In physics you look for a reason, and a logic, and you define a concept.

Now, ancient stories claim tai chi was created in a dream by san feng after he watched a fight between a crane and a snake. Or, it was created by an old, retired general in a village who wanted to make up games for the children. Neither of these concepts can be proven, but we can’t just discount them out of hand.

Maybe the general in Chen village was old, couldn’t do the martial arts the way they should be done, careful not to hurt himself, and actually came up with something. And the vision of the snake and the crane, though I espouse physics I would not disclaim the value of visions, which are the dreams and inspiration of the human race. Still, whether rehabilitation of the aged and injured, or big dreams, tai chi does not make sense without the application of physics.

So this is what I want you to do, I want you to get a book on physics. Make it a simple kids book, simple pictures for illustrations, that sort of thing. It would really help if it was aimed at describing a motor.

Now, read that book, and start asking yourself what terms are the same as in tai chi. Rooting is grounding, where is the generator, and so on. Do that, and when the face and guts of your tai chi chuan start to alter, do not come whining to me.

Al Case has studied martial arts 4O years. He began Tai Chi Chuan in 1974, became a writer for the mags in 1981, and originated Matrixing Technolgy, which is the study of physics in the martial arts. You can get a free ebook on Matrixing at Monster Martial Arts.

Electric Airsoft Guns: How To Pick The Right One

Sunday, September 20th, 2009

With so many different airsoft guns on the market, it can be time consuming and troublesome trying to find the exact design that fits your needs and budget. Electric airsoft guns are a type of airsoft gun with many different styles and types to choose from and will narrow down your search. For example, there are both semi and fully automatic styles which create a selection of assault rifles, submachine guns, and pistols. What you plan on using the airsoft gun for will help you determine what kind of airsoft gun you should purchase as they all vary in terms of power, accuracy, and price.

The activities with which you will be using an airsoft gun should heavily influence the type of electric airsoft gun you end up purchasing. This is because the functionalities and capabilities of different electric type guns are better suited to certain activities.

If you want to practice shooting targets such as pop cans, you can make pretty good use of lower priced designs like a spring rifle or simple pistol. The more expensive high precision electric guns are the ones used by airsoft games enthusiasts.

Since the type of airsoft gun you choose can improve your shooting performance, it is also possible for the gun you’re using to negatively affect your performance. This happens when the wrong gun is being used for a certain activity, so be careful about making the right selection.

Despite the variety available, all electric types have battery powered motors and high capacity magazines as well as instantaneous firing response. All of these advantages make these perfect for combat simulation games. Electric airsoft guns also come in both rifles and pistols.

If you’re looking for an electric rifle, the three main categories are low power, mid power, and automatic electric guns (a. K. A. LPEGs, MPEGs, and AEGs). LPEGs are ideal beginner rifles as the plastic gearboxes found on LPEGs use much less power than metal gearboxes and also require batteries and a charger. MPEGs are full sized electric rifles with metal gearboxes and are one step above the low powered variation.

Automatic electric guns are the product of choice for seasoned airsoft shooters and games participants. Skilled shooters can appreciate the all-metal components and fully automatic capabilities of these electric machine guns. There is also a wide range of extremely accurate and powerful electric pistols.

One thing you shouldn’t do is base your purchase on price alone. Regardless of your budget, you don’t want to end up purchasing a product that does not meet your needs, so make sure you prioritize purpose above price. A good point to remember is the higher the price, the higher the quality of the gun in terms of power. The most cost effective way to select the right electric airsoft gun for you is to decide on all of the features you require and then make a budget-fitting selection from the types and models that fit the description.

The Right Way to Take a Gun Away from a Thug!

Saturday, July 11th, 2009

I was teaching a karate class some years ago, and I had a student whose father would go to the bar next door and imbibe while his son was getting strong and healthy. One day, after class, the father staggers in, and he actually has a gun, and he points it at me and tells me that that karate crap won’t do me any good if a guy has a gun. So I took the gun away from him and grinned.

It is possible to take a gun away from somebody, even easy, and it doesn’t even matter if they are pointing it into your face. I took that fellow’s gun away from him, and I’m going to tell you how I did it. That said, and even considering what I am about to tell you in this article, I don’t recommend risking your face against volatile discharge, and I do recommend giving your money to a fellow holding a gun on you.

The first and most important thing you must consider, when somebody points a gun at you, is which way his communication is going. Typically, a fellow steps steps out of a dark alley, is pointing a gun at you, and he says he will shoot. The intention of his communication is towards you.

Moving slowly so that he sees your total compliance, you put up your hands, and place them in a position that is best for what you are about to do. You should engage in a lot of intensive practice to know what position is best. It is crucially important, in this situation, that you relax your muscles utterly and entirely and make your mind icy calm.

Now, the fellow says to give him your money, and this is the point you have been waiting for. At this point the intent of the communication is towards him, and away from you. At this point he is not intending to shoot because he expects you to move towards him.

As I said, you must have muscles that are totally relaxed, and you must have an utterly calm mind. You are going to hit his wrist, and you must shift your head away from the direction the gun will move in and off the line of attack when you do so. Grab the barrel of the gun and twist it as you slap the inside of his wrist.

Be aware that the gun may go off when you do this, but the gun should have angled so the bullet will miss you. To make this work you must practice the technique, and you must learn how to be relaxed in one position in space, and then virtually instantaneously in another position in space, and then you can actually try different methods of controlling the gun and refining the technique.

Let me say quickly and forcefully that the technique won’t work if the fellow is not interested in getting your money, but rather in kidnapping you for other purposes, or if he is too far away, or if you just read this article and never actually practiced the technique a few thousand times, I also want to say that I wrote this article for training purposes, for enlightenment of the individual when his life is threatened, not to give you the idea that your life is more important than money. I also want to let you know that it is going to be a lot of fun to go to court when the fellow is caught and you get to point a little laughter into his face.
