Boat Props Terminology Decoded

Saturday, April 25th, 2009

For someone who is new to the world of boat props, the terminology used in describing various types and parts of boat propellers can be quite confusing. Given below is a brief description about various terms that you might come across in trying to find yourself a suitable boat propeller.

The parts of a boat prop: The normal boat propeller is made of either three or four blades which surround the hub. The hub, in turn, connects the blades of the propeller to the engines drive shaft. The blades are angled in the way that enables them to screw through water, thereby moving the boat ahead. The leading edge refers to the end of the blade that cuts through water, and the opposite side is referred to as the trailing edge.

Spline: This refers to the teeth of the drive shaft which is not really a propeller part. The design of a hub allows it to fit a shaft in accordance to number of splines.

Features: The classification of a boat prop essentially depends on its diameter and pitch. This is normally displayed in inches with two numbers (for example, 14.5 x 12) and is usually found stamped on the hub. The diameter is referred to by the first number and is the distance from the center of the hub to the end of the blade. The pitch of the prop is denoted by the second number, and gives the distance that can theoretically be traveled by the prop on a single revolution. For instance, a 12 pitch prop can travel about one foot on a single revolution. Pitch is generally referred to as a theoretical number because slips in pitch can be experienced in varied circumstances. A slip is the ratio difference between the distance that is actually traveled and the given prop pitch. The slip could vary under the same conditions; for example, while a heavily loaded work boat could show a 70% slip, a well maintained boat could experience a 10% slip in the same waters.

The rotation can be either left or right hand. A majority of the boat props have right hand rotation. You can expect to find a left handed one on engines wherein double engines are needed to counter the motors torque which can lead to pulling the steering in one direction.

A cupped blade refers to the special treatment wherein the prop blades trailing edge is curved. This helps increase performance levels under specific conditions.

Rake is used to describe the angle of the blade from where it connects with the hub. Negative rakes indicate forward pointed blades, and this is usually done to add strength to high end propellers.

Before you start, it is important that you note down your engines specifications, such as make, horse power (HP), model, etc. and your existing props details like its material (steel, aluminum, etc), diameter, pitch, and number of blades. You can then comfortably embark upon your hunt for a new boat prop.

Maintaining your Boats Propeller: A Brief Guide

Monday, April 13th, 2009

Only a fraction of all boat owners pay particular attention in maintaining their boat props; and this is despite the fact that the condition of your boat prop would have a considerable effect on the overall performance your boat. Following some simple propeller maintenance steps, however, will ensure that your propeller does not give you any problems when you are in the middle of the ocean.

It is always a good idea to periodically remove the prop from the shaft and check for any damage to any of its components. The tools you would require for this would depend upon the make and model of the prop.

Most of the commonly available boat props use a nut retaining device that helps keep the nut in place whilst in use. The two main types are the locking tab washer and the cotter pin. You can remove a cotter pin by using a plier to straighten it out. Once straight, it can be gently tapped out of place, and then pulled out using the plier. If you need to work on a locking tab washer, you would require a flat-head screwdriver. The screwdriver needs to be inserted under the tabs that are bent downwards, and these need to be pried upwards till they go past the notches in the washer. There could be more tabs to be unlocked, and you should check for these as well.

Once the nut is exposed, it can then be removed. Wearing leather gloves while taking out the nut is a good idea because the blades of the prop can be very sharp. After removing the nut, you should remove any spacers within the shaft and then remove the propeller. You would normally find a thrust washer in front of the prop, and this has to be taken out too.

Once this is done, you should take out any debris that has been tangled within the shaft. If you do not do this periodically, the water flow and the gas exhaust can be adversely affected, and it can also result in frictional damage which can be fairly expensive to repair. Also, to avoid seizing, application of waterproof grease (only a thin coat) along the splined (grooved) area of the propeller is recommended.

When you start reassembling you propeller, it is important that you check if any of the parts are worn out or damaged. For instance, you should ensure that the thrust washer resembles a perfect circle and fits snuggly into the shaft, while also being free of any deep scratching. You should remember that while replacing worn out/damaged washers would be fairly inexpensive, the resultant damage caused by not replacing them could cost a bomb.

Check you prop for any nicks, cracks, as well as bent blades. If the props center barrel has developed cracks, if it has nicks that are larger than an average thumbnail, and if the blades are severely bent, it is best that you take the prop to a professional boat props repair center.

Noxious weeds cause havoc and are killing animals and fish found around and in the lakes. With this information it is imperative that a solution to this problem is found in a timely manner. People have started looking to pontoon boats for an answer.

The experts agreed that finding a more eco-friendly way of dealing with the over running of the lake and river beds by noxious weeds. The committee that was monitoring the weed problem set up a grant fund that was utilized to find a solution, the best most effective solution they came up with was using pontoon boats for this purpose. Pontoon boats would cause minimal wildlife stresses, were economical and fit it with the budget projected for the project. It was the best solution to a very pressing issue. Then the organization purchased the pontoon boats and soon the project was underway.

The organization purchased three pontoons for the project; this was a minimal investment to solve the ongoing problem. The pontoon boats were delivered with three days and the weed removal project began. The blades were attached to the boat, they wrapped the weeds around the blades and the boats were started. It was found that the boats were exactly what were needed; it took minimal time and effort to rid the lakes and rivers of the noxious weeds. The best part of using pontoon boats was that it didn’t endanger any of the wildlife and once the weeds were completely removed, it they reappeared at any point, the pontoon boats could be used again to get rid of them.

This particular organization had over 25,00 acres of lakes and rivers that needed to have different types of noxious weeds removed. By buying the pontoons to remedy the problem, they could use these boats at any time to control the weed problem. It was definitely a smart decision to purchase the pontoon boats one reason was that they didn’t have to use any type of poisons, sprays or chemicals. They were able to solve the weed problem without harming nature. Another good example pontoons are a very versatile watercraft.
