Off-Season Development Can Take Your Game to The Next Level

Thursday, July 21st, 2011

Having confidence in ones talents is important. That’s just what each kid needs to perform well in each activity they do. What are you able to do to help build your childs confidence level? By learning and mastering the things in which they take part, they will gain the confidence they want. Here we will look at team sports as a perfect example. At a young age, the rules and technicalities of any sport can be a little bewildering. This may lead to spending most of the play time trying to work out what to do rather than actually doing it.

When I was younger and playing outfield in baseball, there were instances when I might hope the batter did not hit the ball to me because I did not know where the optimal place would be to throw it if there were a pair runners already on base. This only happened a number of times before I brought it up with my coach and we then ran eventualities for everyone during every future practice. This built my knowledge and confidence about the game and the ‘what if ‘ circumstances so I played my best rather than the fear of failing.

If your youngster has the knowledge, tools and ability to mix fun with learning, their confidence will be just fine . Unfortunately, there are some cases where your kid may seem like they are holding back from using the capabilities and skills that you know they have, maybe they look like they are following the rest of the team rather than being a part of it or leading. If your youngster is far behind the other kids you may want to ask them if there’s anything you could do to help them. In most cases it is unquestionably an issue of interest ( is your child interested in the game ) or confidence in the game. Obviously you can’t force interest, but you can remedy the confidence issue.

If your child expresses interest in the game and appears to be trying, but you notice a confidence issue, then direct attention and instruction is counseled. Sports lessons and clinics Minneapolis can regularly be found based around a summer camp. Most camps supply an appraisal of your child’s ability and information, then apply direct instruction to enhance the capabilities or information as required. Once your youngster takes on this education and instruction from the camp execs, his or her confidence will show the following sports season. After my summer camp between little league seasons, I was ready to go. The camp professionals had taught me everything about the game, the mechanics, the language, everything. I came back next season ready to take on the other team by myself! Of course that can’t be done, luckily I had learned the attitude of being a supportive good player and having good sportsmanship. I had several regular game and practice visitors help me understand how they saw a huge difference after my summer sports camp.

My performance increase was definitely caused by the confidence boost. Had I not gone thru the training and education, I’d have still been holding back and trying not to mess up. Do your analysis, find a local summer sports camp and ask your youngster if she or he would like to attend. The sports training and training will give them the boost they need for next season.

How to Have a Compact Baseball Swing

Monday, May 9th, 2011

One of the most important skills any baseball player can have while they’re up to bat is a compact swing. That type of swing can help you hit the ball harder, and you’ll hit the ball longer, too. You’ll need to create not only bat speed, but bat quickness as well, because your bat quickness will determine how long you can wait to swing at a pitch.

All major league hitters were able to get to the level they are at because of a compact swing. Even though they may strike out quite a bit, it is not due to the compact swing, it is due to bat quickness and the ability of the pitcher. Having a compact swing does not necessarily mean that you will have a quick bat.

The development of a compact swing is something that all young baseball players should aim for. If they plan on playing at a higher level, this will be one of the most important things they will learn.

A compact swing is made within a fairly small area. The bat should be brought from the batter’s shoulder, which is the starting position, into impact with the ball inside the strike zone. The bat should always be near the batter’s head while it’s on its way to the ball. The batter should not try to extend the bat out too far or let it take an indirect path toward the ball. The more compact a batter’s swing is, the faster he will be able to get to the ball. That means he’ll be able to wait longer for the ball to arrive before needs to decide whether to swing.

Developing a compact swing requires practice. There are several drills you can use to help. If you can’t use a batting tee, coaches can stand in front of the hitter and off to the side. The coaches then drop a baseball into the strike zone. Until the hitter is able to shorten his swing and speed it up, he’ll always be late with his swing and miss the ball the dropped ball.

Baseball coaches can also have their hitters stand in front of a barrier such as a wall or fence with the end of the bat against the wall or fence, and the bat handle against their chest. Have them swing after taking their regular batting stance. If their swing is nicely compact, they won’t hit the wall or fence. This particular drill teaches batters to use their hands more than their arms when they’re going after the ball.

Another drill is very effective and can be done by a player even if no one else is present. Place a pillow under the hitter’s lead arm and have him take his normal, full swings but keep the pillow from falling out until he completes the swing and follows through. This particular drill will develop a hitter’s hands and forearms, as well as eliminate long arm swings.

If you are looking to develop a good strong compact swing, these are a few tips that will help you. Remember that all major league baseball players have compact swing and this is one of the reasons that they are major league players. If you plan on playing on a higher level, a compact swing is very important.

Post-Season Training Can Help You Progress Above The Crowd

Having confidence in ones skills is important. For growing children to succeed in their daily trials, it’s exactly what they need. How does your child gain confidence? The Joy of the Texas Rangers

Saturday, August 29th, 2009

I grew up in the heart of Texas, and how enjoyable it was. I loved Abilene and had a great childhood there as far as the settings go. In the household though, things were very different.

As a youngster, for the first few years of my life, I had a great life. My mother and father raised me in a wonderful Christian household. I was brought to church with them every week, never missing a day. My parents were both raised in the church so naturally they were going to do the same with me. Even at the age of three I remember playing in the nursery with other children. I remember going to Vacation Bible School and learning about stories in the Bible (mainly David and Goliath) even as a young child.

It wasn’t until five that my life was turned upside down. My mother got a new job that required her to work on Sunday’s and my father decided to do work around the house on Sunday’s. My days in the church were over at that time. A year later my mother and father began to grow distant. My father began to work late and not come home until almost the next morning. My mother stopped trying to figure things out and they ended up divorcing when I was 8. In the meanwhile, I was around constant fighting for two years.

My mother assured me that they would be okay as a couple, but she was obviously telling me this to put my mind at ease. It took them another two years before they could really tell me what was going on, and my father would even stop by on occasion to make it look like they were still a happy couple. I knew this wasn’t the case.

If there’s anything good that I can share about this experience, it’s the fact that I listened to a lot of radio between the ages of eight and ten. The music would be nice and loud so that I didn’t hear my parents yelling at one another, and there was one point in time where I came across a baseball game on AM radio. I was unfamiliar with the sport at the time.

I would try to listen to a game every day as I learned more about the sport and the different terms. It took me a while to catch on, but I figured it out as time went by. My father would always speak of the Rangers and Nolan Ryan, and I loved hearing the team play each and every day.

Every time my dad came by, I would always close my door, blast the radio, and hope to hear the Rangers on it. My mother came to realize my obsession with the team and she bought me a hat that I would wear every single day. This was during the 1983 season and the team wasn’t great, but it was so much fun to hear them win.

The Rangers are still just as special to me today as they were in 1983. It’s my favorite thing to see the Rangers play, and it all stems back to my childhood. They helped me through some rough years, and I’ll never forget that.

No More Steroids Gossip, MLB!

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

Few times in my life have I witnessed a media story that’s been as dragged out as this whole baseball steroids scandal. The latest in the saga involves David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez, who both allegedly tested positive for steroids a few years back while playing for the Red Sox.

Don’t get me wrong I love David Ortiz. He has been not only the biggest clutch hitter in Red Sox history (Game 4 and 5 of the 2004 ALCS filed in every Sox fan’s memory), but a pretty stand up guy. Now him too!? You know what I really don’t care if he used it! Almost every power hitter since the late 80’s has.

Bonds (damn his head is 5 times bigger than in his Pirate days). Palmeiro (Lied in front of Congress. Nixon would have been proud). Sosa (Yeah he also used corked bats). McGwire (I remember his record breaking home run, watching it at an Atlanta Hooters. Great synthetic memory!). Manny (He probably doesn’t even know he took them). A-ROD (Millions of dollars of pressure on him plus he had to keep up with the Toronto exotic dancer tabs). Canseco (He has been dead on with this scandal and lone truthful source).

When the rest of these guys were filling up stat sheets in the late 90s due to their steroid use, David Ortiz was struggling in Minnesota and his career was on the ropes.

It seems like many people would naturally gravitate toward something that so many others were already doing if they wanted to save their multimillion dollar careers.

Then there’s this whole list that they’re holding back on us as if we’re dogs looking for a treat. The players already “busted” for their steroid use have to hang their heads in shame while the rest of the baseball cheating world is protected by this list.

This story is old news already. How long does the media plan to drag it out for before the finally decide to release this list?!

I’ve had enough of all of the negativity in the baseball world, and I’m really happy to know that football season is just around the corner. I can’t wait to stop hearing everyone fret about steroids, and begin the talk about some good old-fashioned football!

Rodriguez Baseball

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

Known as A-Rod to fans and teammates, Alex Rodriguez plays third base for the New York Yankees. Born in New York City’s Washington Heights neighborhood, Rodriguez moved to the Dominican Republic at the age of four. However, the family soon returned to the US and settled in Miami. Soon after, is father abandoned Alex and his mother, moving to New Jersey.

In Miami Rodriguez would begin his baseball career playing for his high school team. It was here that Alex would go All-American his senior year and be the first high school player to ever to try out for Team America.

Upon finishing high school, Rodriguez signed a letter of intent to play for the baseball team at the University of Miami - but he decided to pursue a professional career in baseball instead, entering the amateur draft.

He was quickly picked up by the Seattle Mariners, where he played as the third 18 year old short stop since the turn of the century. His star was rising, but the season was cut short due to the Major League strike of 1994.

As a result, it wasn’t until 1996 that5 Rodriguez really came into his own. In this season, he batted a very impressive .358, scoring 36 home runs and 123 RBIs, the highest average for any right hand batter in the AL since Joe Di Maggio. This was also the 3rd highest batting average for a short stop in any league - Rodriguez would finish out the season with the Major League’s highest total of hits, runs, doubles and extra base hits, earning him the Major League Player of the Year title.

He would play with several more teams until in 2004 he signed with the New York Yankees. During his years with the Yankees, he would set more records of home runs; RBI’s and win Most Valuable Player in 2005 and again in 2007. Despite all his accomplishments, A-Rod would begin to receive criticism for being unable to perform well in clutch situations, that is under extreme pressure. Fans and sport writers alike would criticize his abilities. Much of this he simply takes in stride and has been quoted as saying, “I could care less. In my career, I’ve been hearing it for a long time. It will never stop until you win five or six World Series in a row, and hit a Joe Carter home run. I’ve done a lot of special things in this game, and for none of that to be considered clutch, it’s an injustice.” He must be doing something right however because in 2007 the Yankees and Rodriguez came to an agreement for a ten year contract at the tune of two hundred and seventy five million dollars and millions more if he breaks the home run record.

The player’s personal life has also been a topic of discussion, with A-Rod having been spotted in the company of another woman at a strip club (he and his wife are divorcing). There have also been rumors that he and the singer Madonna have had an affair, something supported by the singer’s divorce from husband Guy Ritchie.

Welcome To CitiField

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

After a deal was constructed for the new Shea Stadium to receive $20 million a year from Citi Group for naming rights, the stadium was named Citi Field. Not a bad day at the office considering the team is looking at $400 million in the next 20 years. Then of course, you have the Sterling area that will be named after Delta Airlines as well as a substantially large area behind home plate. However, this is just the beginning to many benefits the stadium has for its fans.

While there are a number of benefits which will be available to fans at the new stadium, increased seating will not be one of these amenities. Citi Field will have a seating capacity of 45,000, down from Shea’s 57,000. The improvements which Citi Field features include seven additional elevators, 80 more restroom facilities, 2 more restaurants, 700 additional wheelchair accessible seats and 9 extra luxury suites.

Other things you’ll be able to enjoy is the improvement from 4 to 11 elevators, over 700 more seats for wheelchairs, 9 more luxury suites, 2 additional restaurants, and almost 80 more restroom facilities. Even things you won’t necessarily notice on your own like the dimensions of the seats, which make the games more comfortable watching. While all the benefits are great, the most important factor for the city is that the New York Mets are positioned to be there until at least 2049.

It’s hard to believe that this may have never happened so soon considering the original plans were built around winning the bid to hold the 2012 Olympics. However, everything fell through and eventually opened the door to the Mets organization for a new stadium. Granted, it would have happened anyways, but the timing couldn’t have been better. So take a look at all the images of construction and the computerized blueprint of what the finished product looks like.

In a short time, you’ll be able to experience it for yourself and enjoy everything that Citi Field has to offer. Even though there will no longer be new memories in Shea, the old ones will live in our hearts for eternity. As we move forward, it becomes evident that this new stadium begins a new chapter into the history of the New York Mets. Will you be a part of it?

Remembering Old Shea Stadium

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

Shea Stadium. Oh, the memories that are evoked by those two words. It’s hard to believe that it’s gone after 44 years. It is even harder to think of the Mets as being an expansion team. Haven’t they been around forever? Oh, and for all you trivia buffs out there Shea Stadium was formerly known as the Flushing Meadow Park Municipal Stadium.

Over the years, Shea Stadium housed some of the greatness baseball players ever to walk on the field. Names like Duke Snider, Nolan Ryan, Warren Spahn, Tom Seaver, Willie Mays, Eddie Murray, Yogi Berra, Casey Stengel, Richie Ashburn, and Gary Carter who all became Hall of Famers. Then we can’t forget the entertaining players that just gritted it out everyday like Lenny “Nails” Dykstra and Gil Hodges.

There’s been good times and bad, ugly and outrageous, but at the end of the day, they are all great memories intertwined with the stadium’s history. We watched Dwight Gooden and Daryl Strawberry take the Mets to a World Series win over the Boston Red Sox in 1986. Unfortunately, the fame took its toll as both players spent the rest of their careers dealing with drug issues and other problems.

The historic moments are numerous. In 1969 we witnessed their first Championship when they became known as the Miracle Mets at a time when no one had ever heard of the young Nolan Ryan who would go down in baseball history for striking out 5,714 batters. In fact there are so many historic moments in the story of Shea Stadium that it’s hard to summarize them in an article; we could literally write a book about it. The stadium may be gone as a new chapter begins but the memories will live on for eternity in the hearts of recreation and sports fans all over the world.

When the world was stunned by the news of the September 11 terrorist attacks in 2001, Shea Stadium became a relief center for supplies, food, and a place for the victims to stay. Who can forget the first game after that fateful day when the Mets helped to heal the city? For New Yorkers, it was one of the most inspiring nights ever in baseball history. Thousands of fans packed the stadium to watch as the Mets took on the Atlanta Braves. Before the game started the rescue workers were honored and Diana Ross sang God Bless America. It was a very moving experience as the two teams shook hands, united in the face of the tragedy that shook the world. Yes, our Shea Stadium is like no other. May we always remember and look with anticipation to 50 more years of baseball history.

Babe Ruth

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

Babe Ruth is a name which is instantly familiar to people around the world; even those who are not baseball fans and those far too young to actually remember the Sultan of Swat know his name and are familiar with the House That Ruth Built. Among younger Major League players, one of Babe’s superstitions has taken hold. As Babe said “whenever I hit a home run, I always make sure I touch all four bases”. Babe Ruth was larger than life in every sense of the word and he remains deeply rooted in the popular imagination - for there may be another like him.

George Herman Ruth Jr. was born in 1895 in Baltimore, MD, the son of George H. Ruth Sr. and Kate Schamberger-Ruth. One of two surviving children of eight (the other was his sister Mamie), Babe Ruth has a tough childhood, often being left to care for himself. At the tender age of seven, he was sent to the St. Mary’s Industrial School for Boys, which he recalls more as a reformatory than a school. Deprived of parental guidance except on occasions, Ruth quickly earned a reputation among the nuns at the school as an incorrigible.

Ruth never was one for rules and was not a good fit for the strictly ordered life offered by St. Mary’s school. However, he did learn his lifelong love of the game of baseball while at the school. Jack Dunn, manager of the Baltimore Orioles (then a minor league farm team for the Boston Red Sox) was amazed by the then nineteen year old Ruth’s talent and immediately signed him on. He was given the nickname of “Jack’s newest babe” by teammates - a name that stuck.

With the Orioles for only five months, the Boston Red Sox purchased his contract and at 19, he both pitched and played the outfield for six years. During this period, fans took note of Babe’s performance on and off the field, with his off the field stories being more colorful through his eating and drinking all-night parties that included many women. Playing in his first World Series Game in 1916, he set a record that still stands today, a fourteen inning game that became the longest in the history of the World Series. His pitching skills at this time left him an astounding record of 29 2/3 scoreless innings in World Series bouts alone, a record that stood for forty-three years. In December of 1919, a weird trade of sorts would land him with the Yankees-leaving the Red Sox in a World Series denial until 2004!

He would begin his career as a Yankee in 1920; with Ruth, the Yankees would go on to win 7 American League Pennants and a staggering 4 World Series. In 1920 alone, Ruth hit 54 home runs. Babe was no less popular with fans in New York than he had been in Boston, both for his skills as a player and for his candor. In 1923, the Yankees built the (now former) Yankee Stadium, which would come to be called The House That Ruth Built. Ruth hit a home run on the very first day Yankee stadium was open - as well as helping to secure another World Series title for the Yankees. In 1914, he had married Helen Woodford. Thanks to his success in baseball, he was able to purchase a country home in 1919 and the couple adopted a daughter, Dorothy. The two separated (but did not divorce) in 1925 - at the time, Ruth was involved with the model Claire Hodgson. When Helen Woodford passed away in 1929, Ruth married Hodgson and dedicated an out of the park home run he hit in his first at bat in April of that year.

The achievement that Babe Ruth will be remembered for more than any other is hi s60 home runs in 1927 - this record was finally broken by Roger Maris in 1961. This record continues to be disputed, since Ruth hit his 60 home runs in 154 games as opposed to Maris’ 162 games and 61 home runs. Regardless, there is no dispute about Ruth’s .690 batting average, something which has not been equaled since. This is why Babe Ruth is also known as the Great Bambino and the Sultan of Swat.

Babe’s famous moment in baseball came in Game 3 of the 1932 World Series where the Yankees played the Chicago Cubs. In the 5th inning, after he already had one home run, Babe came to bat and was at a count of two balls and two strikes. Before the next pitch came his way, Babe pointed to the center of the field bleachers and slammed that puppy right where he pointed and some believe it is the longest home run ever hit out of Wrigley Field.

In 1935, Ruth left the Yankees, disappointed at their refusal to make him manager of the team. He went to the Boston Braves, where he was a player and first base coach. Though he had been promised the manager’s job at the Braves starting the next year, Ruth saw that the team would renege on this promise and decided to retire; however, he went out in his inimitable style, hitting three home runs in one of his very last games for a total of 714 in his career. The Great Bambino will be a legend as long as baseball is still played - for his World Series wins, his 2,211 RBIs, his 2.28 career ERA as a pitcher and his colorful personality.

He took over as the Seattle Mariners short stop and quickly showed everyone what he was made of batting an impressive .358 average with 36 home runs and 123 RBI’s. This was the highest average of an American League right hand batter since DiMaggio. Plus it was the third highest ever for a short stop if any league. The year would continue with Alex having the highest totals in runs, hits, doubles, extra base hits, and slugging, ending the year as Major League Player of the Year and nearly the youngest to boot.

He would play with several more teams until in 2004 he signed with the New York Yankees.
