Rodriguez Baseball

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

Known as A-Rod to fans and teammates, Alex Rodriguez plays third base for the New York Yankees. Born in New York City’s Washington Heights neighborhood, Rodriguez moved to the Dominican Republic at the age of four. However, the family soon returned to the US and settled in Miami. Soon after, is father abandoned Alex and his mother, moving to New Jersey.

In Miami Rodriguez would begin his baseball career playing for his high school team. It was here that Alex would go All-American his senior year and be the first high school player to ever to try out for Team America.

Upon finishing high school, Rodriguez signed a letter of intent to play for the baseball team at the University of Miami - but he decided to pursue a professional career in baseball instead, entering the amateur draft.

He was quickly picked up by the Seattle Mariners, where he played as the third 18 year old short stop since the turn of the century. His star was rising, but the season was cut short due to the Major League strike of 1994.

As a result, it wasn’t until 1996 that5 Rodriguez really came into his own. In this season, he batted a very impressive .358, scoring 36 home runs and 123 RBIs, the highest average for any right hand batter in the AL since Joe Di Maggio. This was also the 3rd highest batting average for a short stop in any league - Rodriguez would finish out the season with the Major League’s highest total of hits, runs, doubles and extra base hits, earning him the Major League Player of the Year title.

He would play with several more teams until in 2004 he signed with the New York Yankees. During his years with the Yankees, he would set more records of home runs; RBI’s and win Most Valuable Player in 2005 and again in 2007. Despite all his accomplishments, A-Rod would begin to receive criticism for being unable to perform well in clutch situations, that is under extreme pressure. Fans and sport writers alike would criticize his abilities. Much of this he simply takes in stride and has been quoted as saying, “I could care less. In my career, I’ve been hearing it for a long time. It will never stop until you win five or six World Series in a row, and hit a Joe Carter home run. I’ve done a lot of special things in this game, and for none of that to be considered clutch, it’s an injustice.” He must be doing something right however because in 2007 the Yankees and Rodriguez came to an agreement for a ten year contract at the tune of two hundred and seventy five million dollars and millions more if he breaks the home run record.

The player’s personal life has also been a topic of discussion, with A-Rod having been spotted in the company of another woman at a strip club (he and his wife are divorcing). There have also been rumors that he and the singer Madonna have had an affair, something supported by the singer’s divorce from husband Guy Ritchie.

The Masters Golf Winners

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

Masters golf winners are very proud to hold the titles they do. This golf tournament is one of four major golf championships held in Augusta, Georgia at the Augusta National Golf club. This is a private golf club that is not open to the public.

This event is an official event which is part of the PGA Tour, the PGA European Tour and the Japan Golf Tour. The tournament is also known as the U.S. Masters and is by invitation only, being operated entirely by its host, the Augusta National Golf Club. The invitation only format of the tournament means that far fewer players participate than in the other major championship tournaments. The Masters is the first of the year\’s major tournaments and is held at the beginning of April each year.

The top prize awarded to Masters Golf Winners is the green jacket. While this jacket was once a subject of disdain because of its unusual color, it is now a much sought after prize. Since 1949, the jacket has been part of the victor\’s spoils; the winner of the tournament may keep and wear the jacket for a year before returning it to the Augusta National Golf Club. One of the traditions attached to the jacket is that the previous winner of the jacket helps the new champion into the jacket upon their winning the tournament.

There is also prize money awarded to Masters golf winners totaling $7.5 million. The top winner of the tournament is awarded $1.35 million and a Gold Medal. The player with the lowest score of the day receives a crystal vase. All players that perform a hole in one or a double eagle are awarded a large crystal bowl. Players that perform an eagle are given a set of crystal goblets. The winner of the par 3 competition the day before the tournament is also given a crystal bowl. The runner up wins a Silver Medal.

There are many Masters golf winners that have won the title of the tournament more than once in their career. Jack Nicklaus holds the most records and is regarded as the champion of the Masters with six tournament wins between 1963 and 1986. Arnold Palmer and Tiger Woods are both tied with four wins of the Masters Tournament each. The first non-American to win the Masters in 1961 was Gary Player from South Africa.

Masters golf winners are among the best golfers in the world ” and since this tournament is open only to players who have been invited by the Augusta National Golf Club, even being asked to participate in this tournament is quite an honor in itself, whether or not the player goes home as one of the Masters golf winners. With the biggest names in the sport and a large amount of prize money as well as the famed green jacket at stake, fans watch this even closely every year.

Is It True Hockey Still A Major Sport?

Saturday, June 20th, 2009

Hockey was once one of the four major American sports. The big four were the National Football League, Major League Baseball, the National Basketball Association and the National Hockey League. But yet, even as some in those group dominate the others (the NFL dominates all sports in terms of popularity), the NHL has not been able to really keep up with the others.

In fact, hockey is not truly considered to be in that big four grouping any longer. Of course, a more accurate description of the sports climate might show that NASCAR and MMA have joined the NFL, NBA and MLB in that top tier. Hockey however is on the outside looking in, no longer enjoying the popularity it once did.

How did this happen to the NHL? Was it the entire season that was lost to the lockout that did this? No, that wasn’t the reason, that lost year to the lockout was actually a symptom of the problem itself. The lockout was held because salaries were getting out of control and many franchises, outside of the most popular ones such as the New York Rangers and Detroit Red Wings, simply could not afford to keep paying as much to their players as they were.

As any fan who lives in a city with a NHL franchise knows, declining ticket sales aren’t the cause of NHL franchises’ slumping revenues; games continue to be well attended and eagerly looked forward to. The reason for the lower revenue has to do with broadcast rights, a significant source of income for the NHL. Hockey is simply less popular as a televised sport than it once was.

While the lockout wasn’t in itself the cause of the NHL’s problems, it certainly didn’t help. When hockey returned to television in the 2005-2006 season, ESPN passed on the broadcast rights for NHL games. OLN (now known as Versus) picked up the broadcast rights - this network has a much smaller reach than ESPN and correspondingly shallower pockets. As a result, the NHL continues to have financial difficulties and many hockey fans are unable to receive NHL games at all, something that does not bode well for the NHL’s ability to recapture the attention of sports fans.

Adding to this problem is the fact that hockey isn’t the most captivating sport to watch on television. It is a fantastic sport to take in live. This helps explain why the sport is so popular in major metropolitan areas where there is a hockey team. These fans get to go to the games and take in the rabid culture. You can hear the turns and stops of the skating, you can feel the jarring checks as players hit the ice and fall into the boards. The speed and precise nature of the game comes out in a way that it simply cannot on television. Those people who never see a game in person therefore, may not even know what they are missing out on by not being a hockey fan.

Therefore the answer to the question is that no, hockey is no longer one of the major sports in this country. It has lost it’s place in that upper echelon, and is struggling for a strategy to get back. It needs to find a way to make its television games more exciting, while also getting those games aired in a spot where more people can view them. Until both of those happen it may be hard for the NHL to regain the spotlight it once had.

Are You Looking For Some Nice Soccer Ball Pictures?

Monday, June 1st, 2009

Many aspects have been covered in this article so that you can benefit from an extended research.

The very essence of the soccer game consist in using the soccer ball on a field according to the game rules, which makes soccer appealing and easy to play by people of all ages and genders. The soccer ball has undergone essential transformations over the years. Books and soccer history records still have all sorts of pictures of soccer balls that are relevant for the evolution stages of this apparently simple item. Such soccer ball pictures are also available on the Internet for download, or they can be uploaded by those who know how.

Probably the Internet is more easily available than the soccer history books. Besides, the thousands of pictures of soccer balls online have the advantage of impeccable digital quality as compared to the paper printed ones. Another aspect in favor of the Internet is the speed of accessing the pictures. With a few clicks of the mouse you’ll get true slide shows including pictures of soccer balls and more.

The pictures of soccer balls are normally displayed for advertising or commercial purposes. Therefore, by using the Internet you will actually get a full picture of each product, in general and of the soccer balls in particular. The balls used in football/soccer associations are, according to the specifications under Law 2, air field spheres with a circumference of 68-70 cm, inflated to a pressure of 60-110 kPa, a weight of 410-450 g and covered in leather or other suitable materials. All these details usually appear together with the pictures of soccer balls you will find on the net, whether they are meant for children use, professional players’ use or any other purposes. Thus, if you would like to buy a giant soccer ball, for instance, you will check for such details together with the product price tag posted for each item.

There are also charity sites which present the pictures of soccer balls that have become famous throughout the world in time. Such items that are seldom available, sometimes become the object of auctions for fund raising.

What Does The Soccer Ball Pattern Mean On A Soccer Ball?

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009

Thank you for read this article, what follows is the result of great research put into excellent writing.

A trained eye who loves football will often recognize a soccer ball pattern without any difficulty. However, if you have no soccer experience it is almost impossible to identify similarities in game structure and the way the players move, pass the balls, dribble and try to score. According to experts the soccer ball pattern results from quality training and analytical thinking. When a player knows the pattern well and uses personal all the knowledge he/she has on the field, the entire team benefits from his/her skill. Moreover, the soccer ball pattern is not something performed individually, since it depends on the unity in the soccer formation.

The way the team colleagues work together develops by training in time, and the coach is the one to teach the soccer ball pattern so that the players have a good performs for the assigned individual position on the field. The real mastery of the soccer ball pattern comes in time and involves a constant evolution. Thus, the strategy of the opposing teams is always under scrutiny, since all the weaknesses and merits can be further used in the personal soccer ball pattern. The entire team contributes to the making of the soccer ball pattern since it is a collective merit.

Amateurish players face difficulties in developing a real soccer ball pattern, but for hobby playing it is not even important to have great skills. Most of the time players stick to a certain way of moving on the field and do little in the direction of changing something in their play. This can sometimes be a problem for the success on the field, but since we are not talking about professional achievements, things are definitely not very pressing. Therefore, the soccer ball pattern is not an objective in itself when playing for sheer personal pleasure.

To sum it up, the soccer ball pattern remains a major attribute of team playing particularly in professional leagues and championships. Although not easy to identify and characterize by an untrained eye, it remains an inherent part of the training standards specific to every team. Every player needs to contribute to the creation of the soccer ball pattern and thus get closer to winning goals for his/her team. Yet, sometimes, changes in the soccer ball pattern are necessary particularly when the results are not the expected ones.

Welcome To CitiField

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

After a deal was constructed for the new Shea Stadium to receive $20 million a year from Citi Group for naming rights, the stadium was named Citi Field. Not a bad day at the office considering the team is looking at $400 million in the next 20 years. Then of course, you have the Sterling area that will be named after Delta Airlines as well as a substantially large area behind home plate. However, this is just the beginning to many benefits the stadium has for its fans.

While there are a number of benefits which will be available to fans at the new stadium, increased seating will not be one of these amenities. Citi Field will have a seating capacity of 45,000, down from Shea’s 57,000. The improvements which Citi Field features include seven additional elevators, 80 more restroom facilities, 2 more restaurants, 700 additional wheelchair accessible seats and 9 extra luxury suites.

Other things you’ll be able to enjoy is the improvement from 4 to 11 elevators, over 700 more seats for wheelchairs, 9 more luxury suites, 2 additional restaurants, and almost 80 more restroom facilities. Even things you won’t necessarily notice on your own like the dimensions of the seats, which make the games more comfortable watching. While all the benefits are great, the most important factor for the city is that the New York Mets are positioned to be there until at least 2049.

It’s hard to believe that this may have never happened so soon considering the original plans were built around winning the bid to hold the 2012 Olympics. However, everything fell through and eventually opened the door to the Mets organization for a new stadium. Granted, it would have happened anyways, but the timing couldn’t have been better. So take a look at all the images of construction and the computerized blueprint of what the finished product looks like.

In a short time, you’ll be able to experience it for yourself and enjoy everything that Citi Field has to offer. Even though there will no longer be new memories in Shea, the old ones will live in our hearts for eternity. As we move forward, it becomes evident that this new stadium begins a new chapter into the history of the New York Mets. Will you be a part of it?

Mike Tyson Info

Mike Tyson: Triumph and Tragedy

Few athletic figures in recent decades have captured the public’s attention, for better or for worse, than Mike Tyson. At his best, Mike Tyson was one of the most feared boxers of all time. He won many a fight before stepping into a ring from the complete and utter fear that gripped his opponents at the thought of meeting this compact, muscle bound, wrecking ball of a man. At his worst, he has been in and out of jail, battling drug addiction and generally causing an unwanted havoc both in and out of the ring.

Mike Tyson’s Rise to Stardom and the Heavyweight Championship

Mike Tyson as a youth was a notorious troublemaker, being arrested literally dozens of times through his early adolescence. Discovering boxing and his innate talent for it though, changed his life around gave him a focus and a drive to achieve. These traits were also imparted unto him by legendary trainer Cus D’Amato. D’Amato was more than a boxing trainer for Tyson, he was a life coach, and his guidance and role model status meant everything to Tyson. Later, it would be the death of D’Amato, the only man left trying to reign in the “Baddest Man on the Planet”, that would help contribute to his rapid and tragic fall from grace.

Tyson made a huge splash in the sport, becoming known almost overnight as a champion in waiting. In his first 19 bouts, he won by knockout, often before the first round was finished! Even after winning the title, Tyson continued to defend the title and won other belts soon after. It seemed that he was at least for the time being, unbeatable.

The Beginning of the End

Going into the contest as an overwhelming 42-1 favorite over James Buster Douglas, Douglas did not back down from the champion and ended up knocking him out in the tenth round. Tyson lost his championship and his aura of invincibility, and much else would soon follow. He would soon be in jail, serving out a multiyear prison sentence for rape.

Tyson’s return to boxing was something which many, not only boxing fans had been eagerly awaiting. He quickly won a title belt on his return to the sport; but a match which saw Tyson against Evander Holyfield was the event which really marked his downfall as a serious contender in the field of boxing. Holyfield took Tyson down in the 11th round. There was a rematch of the bout, in which as everyone knows, Tyson bit a chunk out of Holyfield’s ear, leading to his disqualification. There have been minor comebacks, major defeats such as that seen in his demolition by Lennox Lewis and he has come to be seen by many fans as a sad case.

Mike Tyson Today

Currently, Mike Tyson is better known as a marginal celebrity who is frequently in rehab or being arrested. While comebacks are discussed from time to time, making many eager to see Tyson fight - or implode again, it is hard to say if a comeback is in the works. Tyson has stated that he is trying to mend his ways and expresses remorse for his misdeeds; but it is too early to say what the future may hold for this boxing legend.

Remembering Old Shea Stadium

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

Shea Stadium. Oh, the memories that are evoked by those two words. It’s hard to believe that it’s gone after 44 years. It is even harder to think of the Mets as being an expansion team. Haven’t they been around forever? Oh, and for all you trivia buffs out there Shea Stadium was formerly known as the Flushing Meadow Park Municipal Stadium.

Over the years, Shea Stadium housed some of the greatness baseball players ever to walk on the field. Names like Duke Snider, Nolan Ryan, Warren Spahn, Tom Seaver, Willie Mays, Eddie Murray, Yogi Berra, Casey Stengel, Richie Ashburn, and Gary Carter who all became Hall of Famers. Then we can’t forget the entertaining players that just gritted it out everyday like Lenny “Nails” Dykstra and Gil Hodges.

There’s been good times and bad, ugly and outrageous, but at the end of the day, they are all great memories intertwined with the stadium’s history. We watched Dwight Gooden and Daryl Strawberry take the Mets to a World Series win over the Boston Red Sox in 1986. Unfortunately, the fame took its toll as both players spent the rest of their careers dealing with drug issues and other problems.

The historic moments are numerous. In 1969 we witnessed their first Championship when they became known as the Miracle Mets at a time when no one had ever heard of the young Nolan Ryan who would go down in baseball history for striking out 5,714 batters. In fact there are so many historic moments in the story of Shea Stadium that it’s hard to summarize them in an article; we could literally write a book about it. The stadium may be gone as a new chapter begins but the memories will live on for eternity in the hearts of recreation and sports fans all over the world.

When the world was stunned by the news of the September 11 terrorist attacks in 2001, Shea Stadium became a relief center for supplies, food, and a place for the victims to stay. Who can forget the first game after that fateful day when the Mets helped to heal the city? For New Yorkers, it was one of the most inspiring nights ever in baseball history. Thousands of fans packed the stadium to watch as the Mets took on the Atlanta Braves. Before the game started the rescue workers were honored and Diana Ross sang God Bless America. It was a very moving experience as the two teams shook hands, united in the face of the tragedy that shook the world. Yes, our Shea Stadium is like no other. May we always remember and look with anticipation to 50 more years of baseball history.

Babe Ruth

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

Babe Ruth is a name which is instantly familiar to people around the world; even those who are not baseball fans and those far too young to actually remember the Sultan of Swat know his name and are familiar with the House That Ruth Built. Among younger Major League players, one of Babe’s superstitions has taken hold. As Babe said “whenever I hit a home run, I always make sure I touch all four bases”. Babe Ruth was larger than life in every sense of the word and he remains deeply rooted in the popular imagination - for there may be another like him.

George Herman Ruth Jr. was born in 1895 in Baltimore, MD, the son of George H. Ruth Sr. and Kate Schamberger-Ruth. One of two surviving children of eight (the other was his sister Mamie), Babe Ruth has a tough childhood, often being left to care for himself. At the tender age of seven, he was sent to the St. Mary’s Industrial School for Boys, which he recalls more as a reformatory than a school. Deprived of parental guidance except on occasions, Ruth quickly earned a reputation among the nuns at the school as an incorrigible.

Ruth never was one for rules and was not a good fit for the strictly ordered life offered by St. Mary’s school. However, he did learn his lifelong love of the game of baseball while at the school. Jack Dunn, manager of the Baltimore Orioles (then a minor league farm team for the Boston Red Sox) was amazed by the then nineteen year old Ruth’s talent and immediately signed him on. He was given the nickname of “Jack’s newest babe” by teammates - a name that stuck.

With the Orioles for only five months, the Boston Red Sox purchased his contract and at 19, he both pitched and played the outfield for six years. During this period, fans took note of Babe’s performance on and off the field, with his off the field stories being more colorful through his eating and drinking all-night parties that included many women. Playing in his first World Series Game in 1916, he set a record that still stands today, a fourteen inning game that became the longest in the history of the World Series. His pitching skills at this time left him an astounding record of 29 2/3 scoreless innings in World Series bouts alone, a record that stood for forty-three years. In December of 1919, a weird trade of sorts would land him with the Yankees-leaving the Red Sox in a World Series denial until 2004!

He would begin his career as a Yankee in 1920; with Ruth, the Yankees would go on to win 7 American League Pennants and a staggering 4 World Series. In 1920 alone, Ruth hit 54 home runs. Babe was no less popular with fans in New York than he had been in Boston, both for his skills as a player and for his candor. In 1923, the Yankees built the (now former) Yankee Stadium, which would come to be called The House That Ruth Built. Ruth hit a home run on the very first day Yankee stadium was open - as well as helping to secure another World Series title for the Yankees. In 1914, he had married Helen Woodford. Thanks to his success in baseball, he was able to purchase a country home in 1919 and the couple adopted a daughter, Dorothy. The two separated (but did not divorce) in 1925 - at the time, Ruth was involved with the model Claire Hodgson. When Helen Woodford passed away in 1929, Ruth married Hodgson and dedicated an out of the park home run he hit in his first at bat in April of that year.

The achievement that Babe Ruth will be remembered for more than any other is hi s60 home runs in 1927 - this record was finally broken by Roger Maris in 1961. This record continues to be disputed, since Ruth hit his 60 home runs in 154 games as opposed to Maris’ 162 games and 61 home runs. Regardless, there is no dispute about Ruth’s .690 batting average, something which has not been equaled since. This is why Babe Ruth is also known as the Great Bambino and the Sultan of Swat.

Babe’s famous moment in baseball came in Game 3 of the 1932 World Series where the Yankees played the Chicago Cubs. In the 5th inning, after he already had one home run, Babe came to bat and was at a count of two balls and two strikes. Before the next pitch came his way, Babe pointed to the center of the field bleachers and slammed that puppy right where he pointed and some believe it is the longest home run ever hit out of Wrigley Field.

In 1935, Ruth left the Yankees, disappointed at their refusal to make him manager of the team. He went to the Boston Braves, where he was a player and first base coach. Though he had been promised the manager’s job at the Braves starting the next year, Ruth saw that the team would renege on this promise and decided to retire; however, he went out in his inimitable style, hitting three home runs in one of his very last games for a total of 714 in his career. The Great Bambino will be a legend as long as baseball is still played - for his World Series wins, his 2,211 RBIs, his 2.28 career ERA as a pitcher and his colorful personality.
