Pitching Requires Discipline and Patience

I have instructed over 2,000 pitchers in the last nine years. My best students share some of the same characteristics and they all learn to apply the knowledge they gain from each lesson. Here is a brief list of attributes that my best students share.

The best pitchers study major league pitchers, the way they throw the ball. They are very anxious to learn about every aspect of baseball and are not just interested in learning how to pitch. They understand they must have knowledge of situational pitching and do what it takes day in and day out to improve their game. Once an experienced pitcher has a ton of wins under their belt, they do not boast about them; they continually strive to do their best and know there is plenty of room to improve.

Pitchers are smart enough to learn from past experiences of the previous pitchers before them. They are avid students of the game. Pitchers who are accustomed to winning also accept failure as part of the learning experience and dont take it personally. They realize everyone has a bad outing every once in a while and let it go because there is nothing they can do to change a bad game other than not to dwell on it.

Winning pitchers visualize success before it happens. They study hitters; they know each hitters weaknesses and then they attack those areas they are most vulnerable. Their pitching workouts are very challenging; they are workhorses. Winning pitchers trust their team that they will back them up. They help other teammates succeed. They are leaders!

Pitchers are leaders, not followers. They have complete control over the game and are eager to help others succeed on the team. They dont keep their knowledge a secret to anyone on the team. They will always be a step ahead of their competition, not only in knowledge of pitching; but their opponents weak areas. They never accept mediocrity and if they see a chance to improve in any area of their life, they are humble enough to work on it.

The very best Pitchers dont stress the small stuff. If they give up a hard hit; they will never allow that hitter to do that again, especially that very day.
