What might have been a crackling partisan thriller gets to be a high-gloss melodrama as an alternative, trudging and far-fetched, albeit Lange is excellent in this rare ethnic role and Mueller-Stahl is hefty as the enigmatic elder. Sodom and Gomorrah: Lavish retelling of life in biblical double cities of transgression. Hefty cast, lucid scenes of vice, gore, and the lord’s fury, make this excessively long story of old Hebrews fairly entertaining. Cast includes Stewart Granger, Wharf Angeli, Stanley Baker, Anouk Aimee, and Rossana Podesta. (154 minutes, 1963)
Red River: One of the best American ventures is seriously a western Mutiny on the Bounty. Clift rejects the dominance of Wayne (radiant in an unsympathetic role) throughout a key livestock drive. Captivating photography by Russell Harlan is coupled with an exciting Dimitri Tiomkin score. A movie you need to see. If you don’t pay close attention, you’ll miss Shelley Winters dancing around a campfire.
